Edgar The surname Edgar originated in Scotland and if you have trouble locating a reference to it at a local Highland Games it is because the name originated in the Scottish Lowlands. It is therefore not a name typically associated with the Highland Clans. The surname does use the Nithsdale and/or the Maxwell tartan. Nithsdale is a region along the border between Scotland and England. Historical records at Cambridge University show that the family surname traces back (directly or indirectly) to Gospatrick, Earl of Northumberland, a kinsman of Edgar Aethling, claimant to the English throne and a descendant of King Edgar, great grandson of Alfred the Great. Edgar, son of Duvenald held extensive lands in Nithsdale during the reign of King William the Lion. He granted the Church of Kyllosdern and the Church of Mortun to the Abbey of Kelso. A descendant was the Sheriff of Dumfries who witnessed the marriage of Robert Bruce. Thomas Edgar held Kildonan, and Donald Edgar acquired from King David II the captainship of the Clan McGowin in Nithsdale. All of this is of course very ancient history and impossible to relate to for most of us, however, there is ample evidence that the surname is of Scottish lowlands origin.
