Born 9 December, 1926 in Fairpoint, Belmont Co., Ohio, he was the youngest son of Roy "Dinger" and Lelia Applegarth. His Christian name at birth was Bobby Lee, when he went into the Navy during WW2, he filled out all of the paperwork as "Robert Lee" which is the way it is listed on all official records except his birth certificate. A U.S. Navy veteran of WW2, he returned to his home in Hopedale, Harrison Co., Ohio after the war and went back to school. He immediately picked up the nickname "GI Joe" in school and over the years, the GI part disappeared and he was known as "Joe Applegarth".
He married Evelyn Edgar on 19 June 1948. He was employed for several years at the Scio Pottery Company in Scio, Harrison Co., Ohio. After leaving the pottery, he worked for the Y&O Coal Company at their #2 mine in Hopedale until falling ill to cancer. He lived for nearly 20 years in Cherry Valley, a small coal mining camp near Hopedale. He also lived in Jewett, Scio and finshed out the remainder of his life at his home on Church Street in Hopedale. He passed away 18 January 1984, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Harrison Co., Ohio.
