1905 Applegarth Family Reunion
21 September 1999.

A very special thanks goes out to Joe & Flora VerStraten for providing the following picture taken in 1905 at an Applegarth Family Reunion. Flora is the granddaughter of Gertrude May Mussard, the daughter of Rosalee Applegarth Mussard. Flora and I just discovered each other a couple of months ago and have been able to piece together quite a bit of the family since then. She has sent two versions of the same picture, one is normal sized, the other enhanced. I have only gotten the "enhanced" version to load, so please have a look and if you happen to recognize anyone from an old family photo of your grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., please let me know.

Earlier this month, I received a letter from a newly discovered cousin named Ethel. She is the granddaughter of Albert Allison APPLEGARTH. I will only refer to her by her first name in this article since I don't have her permission to do otherwise. If you would like to contact her personally, email me with your request and I'll contact her for you. The following is a transcript of the letter that she sent me. Everything quoted comes from the letter, if it's not, it's information that I have discovered through my own research.

APPLEGARTH, Albert Allison, married Mary ROBSON. She was from St. Clairsville, Ohio. They had 7 children. They are as follows: Lora L. APPLEGARTH, Jan. 10, 1900 and she married Russell SCHAFER, he was superintendent of schools in Stuebenville & Alliance, Ohio. They had three children.&nbps;   PRIVATE.

Albert's marriage to Mary is listed on page 110 of Belmont County, Ohio, Marriages. The record reads:

Applegarth, Albert A
LANOY, Mary (Mrs) r Belmont          25 Dec 1898

Ethel's family knew Mary as Mary ROBSON and the title "Mrs." in the record would indicate that she, in all likelihood, had been previously married.
Information found in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) provided the following information on Russell SCHAFER:

Russell Schafer, SS issued in Ohio, b. 15 Dec 1896, d. Sep 1984, last residence: Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio. I haven't been able to determine if this is, or is not the right Russell but he was the only one listed and the information is close enough to assume as true at this point in time.

Ada I. APPLEGARTH, born July 19, 1901. She married a Foster and they live in the Pittsburg area. They had two sons.    PRIVATE

Cecil J. APPLEGARTH, born Sept. 02, 1902. He also lived in the Pittsburg area and had 2 sons PRIVATE.

A search of the SSDI produced the following information on Cecil:

Cecil Applegarth, SS issued in Ohio, b. 2 Sep. 1903 (in Ethel's letter, his DoB is listed as 2 Sep. 1902), d. Jun 1975 in PA, last residence: Dravosburg, Allegheny, PA 15034.

Mary APPLEGARTH, born Jan 29, 1906. She died during child birth in the 20's.

Branson K. APPLEGARTH born Sept 14, 1908 and died Dec 20, 1997. He married Irene Blanch Speece an sorry to say I don't know the year. . .He had 4 children, Warren, Howard (Hardy), Larry and Ethel.    PRIVATE

Evelyn L. APPLEGARTH    PRIVATE. Thru the first marriage, she had 3 children, Mary Lou, Peggy and Jim.    PRIVATE

Velva R. APPLEGARTH born May 31, 1914 and I only know she had a son named Terry bit I dont know the last name.

. . .Albert Allison was from Bellaire and some of the Applegarths are in the New Philadelphia (Ohio) area. He mentioned a Joe APPLEGARTH from the Cleveland area

Fruit from the Tree
31 August 1999

I just received an email from my recently discovered cousin, Ethel Shaffer (Applegarth). She's the daughter of Branson K., and granddaughter of Albert Allison Applegarth. The email reads, quoting the proud great-aunt:

"Hey, add one more to the tree, a baby boy, Brandon Matthew Applegarth born today to Jeff and Chris Applegarth of Massillon Ohio, This is my brother Howards first grandson. This is also the first great grandchild that my dad didn't get to see. I miss him.. E"

Personally, I'd like to thank Ethel for sharing the news. I'd like to offer a collective "congratulations" from all of the "extended" family to the proud parents, grandparents, and of course great-aunts on Brandon Matthew's birth. May he enjoy a happy and prosperous life.
